REPATRIATED BENIN ARTEFACTS' CUSTODY SETTLED, MONARCH TELLS ENVOY

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, says custody of the repatriated Benin artefacts has been settled by the Federal Government, stressing that there is no more controversy over the issue.

The Oba made the clarification at his palace on Friday during a meeting with the Ambassador of The Netherlands to Nigeria, Wouter Plomp, saying the Federal Government rightly recognised the significance of having the repatriated artefacts in the custody of the Oba of Benin.

Recall that the Federal Government had in Notice No. 25 in the official Gazette No. 57, Volume 110 at pages A245-247, dated March 23, 2023 laid to rest, the raging tussle between the Oba and the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on who to be the custodian of the repatriated artefacts.

Reacting to comments by the Ambassador of The Netherlands on the future of repatriated Benin bronzes, Oba Ewuare II said the future of the Benin bronzes and artefacts were in the gazette.

The Oba said, “The ownership, custody, and management of the artefacts are clearly stated, which is vested in the Oba as an institution. That is the law.

“The ongoing plans for the construction of Benin Royal Museum Project, at the instance of the Nigerian government, is on course. It is a Federal Government project and we have been on it for some time now.”

Addressing the Benin throne earlier, the Ambassador hailed Oba Ewuare II for redirecting the course of history.

He pledged his country’s support in strengthening Nigeria in the area of employment and cultural diplomacy.

“We are very interested in all the history of the Benin bronzes, some of which are still in the Netherlands. Contacts are underway between Netherlands Commission for monuments and the Commission for monuments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

‘There has been meetings between the commissions about the future of the Benin Bronzes,” Plomp added.

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

Graphic communication as the name suggests is communication using graphic elements. These elements include symbols such as glyphs and icons, images such as drawings and photographs, and can include the passive contributions of substrate, colour and surroundings. It is the process of creating, producing, and distributing material incorporating words and images to convey dataconcepts, and emotions.

The field of graphics communications encompasses all phases of the graphic communications processes from origination of the idea (design, layout, and typography) through reproduction, finishing and distribution of two- or three-dimensional products or electronic transmission.

Graphic Communications focuses on the technical aspects of producing and distributing items of visual communication. This includes technical aspects associated with the production of tangible items such as books, magazines and packaging, as well as digital items such as e-newsletters, interactive apps, websites, video and virtual reality applications.

Graphic communication involves the use of visual material to relate ideas such as drawingsphotographsslides, and sketches. The drawings of plans and refinements and a rough map sketched to show the way could be considered graphical communication.

Graphic Design focuses on development of concepts and creation of visuals. These includes instruction regarding elements and principles of design, typography, image editing, web and video production, etc.

Any medium that uses a graphics to aid in conveying a messageinstruction, or an idea is involved in graphical communication. One of the most widely used forms of graphical communication is the drawing.[3]

Another name for Graphic design is ‘Commercial art’

Emphatically, below are some of the examples of graphic design works ;

- Poster/handbill design,

- Book cover/jacket design,

- Logo design,

- Shopping bag design,

- Product/Package design,

- Label design,

- Animation,

- Image/Video editing etc

Meanwhile, for you to communicate effectively with your graphic work, there are certain rules or principles that are to be put into consideration and these rules are otherwise known as The Principles of Design and these are as follows;

Proportion: Proportion is the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other. In other words, it is the relationship between one element and another.

Movement : This is the controlling  of the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from one to the next and the information is properly communicated to your audience.

Contrast: Contrast is what people mean when they say a design “pops.” It comes away from the page and sticks in your memory.

Emphasis: This is the aspect of your design you  want to catch the attention of your audience first. It also simply refer to as an area in a work of art being highlighted and it is done to create a centre of interest.

Repetition:  Repetition unifies and strengthens a design. This is when a particular aspect of your design is repeated more than once e.g choice of text.

Balance: Since you wouldn’t put all your furniture in one corner of a room, so, you can’t crowd all your heavy elements in one area of your composition. Examples of balance in design are Symmetrical Balance , Asymmetrical Balance and Radial Balance

i.                    Symmetrical balance is achieved by giving equal weight to elements across the center-point of a composition. The center-point can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. The result is a repetitive or mirrored (referred to as perfectly symmetrical) image that appears to be completely equally balanced.

ii.                  Asymmetrical balance occurs when the elements on a layout are different, but by being equally weighted still feel balanced. There might be two elements with a similar weight but different shapes, or one larger, heavier element balanced by a couple of lesser focal points.

iii.                Radial balance often naturally occurs in the environment—ripples, whirlpools, tree rings, and flower petals are all examples of this beautiful form of balance. In graphic design, spirals are the best way to achieve radial balance, and these can also be a useful technique for drawing the eye’s attention towards the center of the image. Sales flyers and event posters often use the principle of radial balance through circular frames or borders to draw a customer’s attention to an offer or date.

Note: The images attached to this writeup are works of my students. The first image is a good example of Poster design work and it is for an online fashion store while the second image with three works in a single picture, are all examples of 3D Product/Package design.

THE ART OF SCRIBBLING

According to Pablo Picasso, one of the pioneers of the early 20th century European art movement called, Cubism; "Every Child is an Artist'' and one of the ways to catch them young is to allow them scribble either with pencil, pen, paint or any other form of drawing tools or materials.

Often, we associate scribbling with negative habits: It’s out of control, childish, messy, sloppy or wasteful. But it’s also fun. As an Art instructor, I can tell you that scribbling is one of the best ways to improve your drawing skills.
Scribbling and drawing are the first steps in learning to write. We are to encourage them the children as they grow to scribble and draw.

It may not make any sense to an adult in the first instance. They look like a lot of lines, loops, and squiggles, but these marks are very important to a young child. They are a child’s way of writing his or her thoughts. Drawing and scribbling are the first steps in using the skills children will need later for writing.

How to Do Scribble Art?

How do you create a scribble drawing? Any way that you want to! Pick a surface, pick your materials, pick your subject, then get to work. Embrace spontaneity, and work quickly. Don’t overthink things, make a rough plan, then let your instincts guide you. Will it always work? No, but the beauty of a scribble drawing is that it shouldn’t take you a lot of time. You won’t invest days, weeks, or even months into it, only to make a mistake toward the end that ruins it. Most scribble drawings are done in a day or two at the most, so don’t worry about making mistakes. Just jump into it and enjoy the journey.

Colour in Scribble Drawing

Can you use color in a scribble drawing? Should you use colour in a scribble drawing? The question should be, why wouldn’t you use colour in a scribble drawing? Colour adds life and emotion to any drawing, and it can make a huge difference in a scribble drawing. When choosing colours, make sure that you don’t just start using whatever comes to mind. You should use the same decisions when choosing colours for a scribble drawing that you would for any other type of drawing. In fact, colour in scribble drawing is even more critical because using colours that don’t work well together, combined with the naturally messy nature of a scribble drawing, can lead to a visual disaster. The point is that you should take your time, choose your colours, then get to work. In addition, scribbling in art could be developed from themes like; Nature eg Animal, Plant etc, Life i.e male or female figures  or Still life; for example Chair, Table, Bottle, Bowl etc.

So, do encourage your child to keep scribbling and as an adult, most especially an artist, get involved in scribbling as great art piece can equally come out of scribbling.
